In your career and your vocation is your current knowledge disposable?
As in is it only useful for a short amount of time?
Ask yourself was that knowledge useful 5 years ago, for example, learning how to make an App. Yes, if you were on the start of the App wave it could have been a good investment of your time to learn how to do it. But seriously, for the rest of us, how useful is it in terms of our career to focus on investing life hours learning how to make an App (am excluding hobbies) as you can now outsource it for next to nothing.
So what sustainable knowledge IS useful for you to focus your attention on, as in the stuff that’s still going to be useful in 20 years time.
What will folks’ still need your help with in 20 years time? Is it that you need to become the most amazing Project Manager within the electrical engineering industry, or is it related to people skills, or legal knowledge?
My suggestion to you do over this week is:
~ calculate how many minutes a day could you realistically dedicate to up-skilling? (Be creative, is there time in your day when you are on the road, or commuting, can fit it into a process you already do for work, or have 10mins at the end of every lunchtime?) Then times that by 4 days a week and times that by 40 weeks a year, and there is the amount of time you have that you can put towards becoming even more of an expert in your chosen field β what difference is that going to make on your career in 10,15 and 20yrs time?
~ ask yourself what is something that you want to focus your energy on dedicating time to that is sustainable knowledge?
~ book in your first 4 days worth of SKB (sustainable knowledge building) and start with a topic that really excites you
What you do today determines where your career is at in the near future. 20yrs may sound like a loooong way off, but most of my clients are in their 30’s & early 40’s and have therefore already been working for 20 years. How fast did that go?!
As always, if you are ready to bust a belief, GET A PAYRISE, feel / look / sound / be different, and are keen to tap into a support team then you know where to find me…………HH
And who else do you know that likes thinking & questioning? Plus being the best that they can be WHILST KICKING BUTT IN THEIR CAREER? Well forward this on and invite them into the community π
