The education system teaches us to work things out for ourselves. It drums into us that we are supposed to work things out for ourselves. Yes that is exhilarating when you ‘get it’ for yourself. Yes there are skills that can be gained by learning it for yourself. But what I don’t agree with is the implication that we need to work out everything for ourselves. That so many people plod along thinking that we need to do it all for ourselves.
I mean, what if you don’t know what you don’t know?!? And that’s where different ‘teachers’ come into our lives, and they come in many formats if you are open to them: movies, books, the internet, friends, poems, road blocks, and yes coaches. But I liken coaches to more of education-on-speed-totally-designed-specifically-for-you. When people ask me what is coaching that is one of my answers.
Coaching is your own classroom, about your own world, working things through to make your own world better, and then you can go back out there and help better the rest of the world. I’ll get off my coach soap-box now 🙂
I can think of some classic examples where I had no idea of what I didn’t know, and where asking would have made a huge difference. Like back in China. The day I decided to sell my business. That had my name on the front door. In BIIIIIIIIG letters.
And I was petrified that if anybody found I was planning on selling all my clients would leave, along with my staff, and then I’d just have a few bookshelves, whiteboards and chairs to sell after 5 years of hard work! Now back then I had NO CLUE that there are books on selling businesses, there are business coaches specifically trained in selling businesses, and that there are brokers who can sell your business for you. Cause I didn’t know what to look for, what to ask, nor who to ask. And I thought I needed to be able to do it all by myself for some silly reason. But what was the supposed silly reason? It was a fear that if I admitted I didn’t know something then I would be mocked, or cheated or laughed at. And ironically the fear held me back from better results.
My suggestion to you to ponder over this week on the topic of DIY-education:
~ what thing do you need to talk out, tease out and find a solution or relief to?
~ which day this week are you going to do it? and
~ what are your tools to let the above mentioned fear go before you start? As then you will fly….
As always, if you are ready to bust a belief, feel / look / sound / be different, and are keen to tap into a support team then you know where to find me…………HH
And who else do you know that likes thinking & questioning? Plus being the best that they can be?
Well forward this on and invite them into the community 🙂
