Are we de-skilling ourselves?

My latest ride is something else. The first time I drove it out the driveway it turned the lights and fog thingies on all by itself, it whipped the windscreen wipers on at the first sign of a bit of rain (scaring the begeezus out of me in the process as I was wondering what button I’d accidently pressed!!), and it practically parked itself when I got to my destination.

And then there’s the pre-emptive text thing on my phone and laptop – sometimes I think the software is clearer than I am on what message I want to write, even before I’ve thought it. I wonder if spelling will even need to be taught in schools in the near future?

And that got me to thinking about focusing on our strengths rather than our weaknesses. Yet when is a good time to decide that something is our strength and something else is a weakness (Prep, Grade 4, Yr 10, or perhaps your first year in a job)? And what bits do we need as a society to encourage the population to be fairly competent in? Now me personally, I’m a biiiiig fan of the calculator. Yes I could do more of the calculations in my head or on a bit of paper, yet the calculator wins my attention most of the time if I have something mathematical to do. Yay for the inventor of the calculator!

I’ve heard some describe the ability to speak English as another example of a mandatory skill people in our society should have handled. Yet how many in Australia don’t, yet they are able to live here, survive and some even thrive (you can take your driver’s test, go to the hospital and fill out your tax in any number of foreign languages). Do spelling, maths, speaking English, reverse parking and turning on windscreen wipers even need to be skills that we gain?

Back on track Heidi…….Anyway. What I was really getting at is thinking and reviewing just where we focus our attention & invest our time on a daily basis – is it on weaknesses, or strengths? Do we really need to be good all rounders and spend our time developing such all-round skills? I don’t think we do.

My questions to you, to ponder for this week are:

  • What system are you following or struggling to follow, yet it is not a strength?
  • What would life be like if you could just drop that system or task and focus on something that did light you up instead (knowing that time is our most useful resource so maybe now is the time to outsource some things you do that are not really your strength area or that don’t add to your life)?

As always, if you are ready to bust a belief, feel / look / sound / be different, and are keen to tap into a support team then you know where to find me…………HH
